Capt. Richard Lance wordt door zijn mannen en vriendin ten onrechte verantwoordelijk gehouden voor een Indiase moordpartij op de geliefde luitenant Holloway. Holloway wordt gedood terwijl hij een gevaarlijke Indiase chef naar de gevangenis van een ander fort begeleidt. De chef ontsnapt. Wetend dat hun fort gevaar loopt voor een Indiase aanval, neemt Lance een kleine groep buitenbeentjes van het leger mee naar een verlaten nabijgelegen legerfort om een bergpas te verdedigen tegen de naderende Indiase aanval. Hun missie is om tijd te stoppen totdat versterkingen van een ander fort arriveren. De mannen in deze kleine groep ontevredenen, deserteurs, psychopaten en lafaards haten allemaal kapitein Lance en wensen hem dood. Tot hun grote ergernis erkennen de mannen dat de overlevingsinstincten, militaire kennis en leiderschap van Lance de enige kans zijn die de groep heeft om in leven te blijven.
